Beads Inc. and Fun 2 Bead are right next door to each other in the heart of the Garment District at 1026 Ave of the Americas. Both stores offer you a large selection of semiprecious stones, glass beads, and seed beads - depending on what you want. You will not only find a huge selection of beads, but also the other supplies you will need for DIY projects like findings, clasps, wire, and jewelry making tools. Beads Inc. also has a nice selection of books. Fun 2 Bead has a large variety of bead boards and trays for jewelry making. Fun 2 Bead also offers classes.
Metalliferous
This place is heaven for jewelry designers. You can take a tour inside with Victoria Tillotson, “the ultimate metalchik” at metalchik.com. She gives an excellent look inside and gives you the scoop on tools, metals and findings. Metalliferous is the favorite jewelry supply stores of many of our readers. It is located at 34 W 46th St # 2 in the jewelry district in Midtown Manhattan.
Are you interested in DIY jewelry design but don’t know where to even start? Perhaps you would like to ease into it with a little support. Founded by designer Lindsay Cain, Femmegems, offers customers the chance to use Femmegems inventory of gemstones and findings to “design their own” pieces of jewelry. It is located in NoLiTa and online at Femmegems.com. Online customers can also design-their-own jewelry. Lindsay has also published a book “Get Your Sparkle On: How to Create and Wear the Gems that Make You Shine”.
Femmegems is located in NoLiTa at 280 Mulberry St. between Prince & Houston. You can take the B, D, F, V to Broadway-Lafayette Station or the 6 Ave. local to Bleecker Street Station. The business is setup so that you stop in at any time during regular business hours to design-your-own jewelry with a friend or two, but for larger groups, they offer private design-your-own jewelry party packages at stores in Nolita and Greenwich, CT.
