Indie fashion designer Boaz’ signature logo can still be found in his spring 2008 collection. His fall 2007 collection was a sexy and edgy tribute to the British punk rock glam movement of the 80’s.

Boaz has been designing since he was 15. When he began, he didn’t even know what a fashion designer was. After seeing some fashion work that he had done as a pastime, a friend suggested that he might have a gift. Conveniently, he lived across the street from the fashion high school in his hometown in Israel, but his parents had other plans for his high school education and fashion high wasn’t part of them. They were sure his talents would be better utilized in other pursuits and that the fashion thing was just a phase.

After completing his service in the Israeli army, he finally made it to fashion school. He felt a bit out of his element. “I felt like I didn’t belong. All the other students knew how to draw patterns and I had never drawn one.” After a few months, he realized he did belong and that his lack of “knowledge” was a creative advantage.

He’s been in the industry for over 10 years. He worked for small fashion companies that were similar to his. He was less than passionate about his first line. Once he started letting his passion lead him, he created his Rock-chic clothing line. That was about more than a year ago and he is expecting great things. Talking about his samples, he says, “I will never part with them. I will have them in my old age.”

When creating, he enjoys just playing on one of his sewing machines working on small details. He likes to make small samples and always works from a vision he has of what the silhouette looks like. He is very hands-on. Having a Garment District studio provides easy access to his line throughout the production process. While his line is inspired by rock-n-roll, Boaz also draws inspiration from his roots when searching for text for his fashion items.

Are you thinking about a career in fashion design? Want to break into the fashion world? Think it’s about going to the right school or getting to now the right people? Well, Boaz says it’s about your passion and following your heart. Be yourself and be true to that. He values the experience he gained working for others in the industry and thinks that experience is a great teacher. At the end of the day, a designer has to feel good about his art. His clothing line reflects his philosophy. It’s something he believes in. For Boaz a great designer must feel a strong connection to his creation.
