DIY City mag spoke with Faythe Levine from Handmade Nation a few weeks ago about the progress of the documentary. We had a chance to meet her in person last summer at Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn. Faythe has been working for the past two years to document the rise of DIY and the new wave of art, craft and design.
Handmade Nation is currently in post-production, scheduled for release in 2009. Along the way she has visited 15 cities and held over 50 interviews.
For Faythe this has been a total labor of love. In case you haven’t kept up with the her lately, you will be happy to know that she is also working with Cortney Heimerl on a book, “Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft & Design”. It is scheduled to be published by Princeton Architectural Press (papress.com), in November 2008. The idea is to market the book, “Handmade Nation” as a companion to the documentary. It will feature interview excerpts from the documentary footage along with photos from those featured in the documentary film.
The documentary is independently produced and so that means that Faythe is still working to raise money for production costs. Recently she was made the recipient of the Mary L. Nohl fellowship for emerging artists. This was a big boost financially, yet there are still additional funds needed to complete production. One of the main ways that Faythe has been able to raise funds is through her Etsy shop. You can visit her Etsy shop where you can buy the “Craft Tree” t-shirts & totes. The t-shirts and totes were designed by Lara Cameron. Many Etsy sellers have donated to the Handmade Nation shop (indiecraftmovie.etsy.com) to help raise funds for the documentary.
We can’t wait till the release. To learn more about Faythe’s work you can visit her blog and read a great interview that Vanessa from Etsy did with her in January.
