DIY City: Do you also create other eco-friendly projects such as the upcycled Slide Chandelier ? What inspired you to make it?

JN: I stopped into an antique store in Brooklyn one day, and they were selling a full box of someone’s slides from an estate sale. I opened the box to find shots of taxidermy, family vacations to Germany and colonial restoration villages. I knew I had to use them, and since my boyfriend Chris had just moved in with me I decided to make him a chandelier for our new place together. I have always loved to find new uses for old/discarded things. It’s such a shame that amazing stuff like slides, microfiche and other materials like that get thrown away. So, I try to find new and creative uses for garbage whenever I can.
In fact, there’s a family joke that my mom knew I was going to be an artist one day when I was little and she was teaching me how to do laundry. She showed me how to clean out the lint trap in the dryer, and I was stunned to see a whole trash can full of rainbow colored pilly sweater bits and other ‘lint’ that was being thrown away. and I asked her - ‘what can we make out of this stuff?’ As it turns out, lint is extremely flammable. My mom showed me how to make fire starters out of wax and lint from the washing machine when I was a girl scout years later. Thanks Mom!
